
One of the most common Turkish student mistakes is the use of “later” or “after.” “Later” and “after” are not used in English to indicate future time for only one event. Instead, we use “in.”
Bad English
I will go to class 10 minutes later. ![]()
I will go to class 10 minutes after. ![]()
He’s going to go on holiday 2 weeks later. ![]()
He’s going to go on holiday after 2 weeks.
Good English
I will go to class in ten minutes. ![]()
He’s going to go on holiday in 2 weeks.
More Examples:
Let’s say the time is 10am. Class finishes at 1pm.
When will class finish?
Class will finish at 1pm. ![]()
Class will finish in 3 hours.
Class will finish 3 hours later. ![]()
Class will finish after 3 hours. ![]()
Class will finish 3 hours after.
Let’s say the date is March 15th. There are 31 days in March.
When does April begin?
April begins on April 1st. ![]()
April begins in 16 days.
April begins 16 days later. ![]()
April begins after 16 days. ![]()
April begins 16 days after.
