Common Turkish Mistakes #1

Image
One of the most common Turkish student mistakes is the use of “later” or “after.”  “Later” and “after” are not used in English to indicate future time for only one event.  Instead, we use “in.”

Bad English :(

I will go to class 10 minutes later. :(
I will go to class 10 minutes after. :(
He’s going to go on holiday 2 weeks later. :(
He’s going to go on holiday after 2 weeks. :(

Good English :)

I will go to class in ten minutes. :)
He’s going to go on holiday in 2 weeks. :)

More Examples:

Let’s say the time is 10am.  Class finishes at 1pm.

When will class finish?

Class will finish at 1pm.  :)
Class will finish in 3 hours. :)

Class will finish 3 hours later. :(
Class will finish after 3 hours. :(
Class will finish 3 hours after. :(

Let’s say the date is March 15th.  There are 31 days in March.

When does April begin?

April begins on April 1st. :)
April begins in 16 days. :)

April begins 16 days later. :(
April begins after 16 days. :(
April begins 16 days after. :(

That’s all for today.  We hope you learned something and improved your English.

Plural You

Image

Many languages have more than one word for the English “you.”  In Turkish, there is sen (for singular “you”) and siz (for plural or formal “you”).  Spanish is similar with tu and ustedes.  Vietnamese has at least 8 forms of “you” depending on if you are older, younger, a man, a woman, and on your social status.

Most grammar books tell us that there is only one “you” in English.  This “you” is both singular and plural, formal and informal.  This is not actually always true.  In American English there are differences between singular “you” and plural “you”.  However, there is no difference between formal and informal.

Look at the map above to see what different people around America say for plural “you.”

Examples:

Scott from Ohio:  How are you doing? - to 1 person

Scott from Ohio:  How are you guys doing? - to more than 1 person.

Bill from Texas:  What are you up to this evening? - to 1 person

Bill from Texas:  What are ya’ll up to this evening? - to more than 1 person

Note: “guys” is used for both men and when in this way.

New Year’s Resolutions

Image

New Year’s Day is the time to celebrate the ending of one year and the beginning of the next.  Often people go to big parties and drink a lot.  At midnight everyone counts down to 0.  After you finish counting down, you are supposed to give someone a kiss.

New Year’s is also the day that we make our New Year’s resolutions.  Some people resolve to join a gym, lose weight, find a better job, or go back to school.  Others vow to visit family more or to stop spending so much time at home.  A resolution can be anything in your life that you want to change for the better.

What’s your New Year’s resolution?

The Holiday Season

Image
Just a reminder, Oxford House College will be closed on December 25th and January 1st.

What exactly are the holidays for?

Well many students often think that Christmas and New Year’s are the same day, January 1st. This is not true. They are actually separate holidays for much of the English speaking world. Christmas is on December 25th and New Year’s is on January 1st.

What is Christmas?

For Christians, Christmas is a very special day because it is the day that Jesus was born. Christians celebrate his birth by going to church, exchanging gifts, and spending time with family and friends.

For many others, Christmas is simply a time of gift-giving and a chance to spend time with family and friends.  It’s also a time when many people go shopping crazy (more crazy shoppers) or spend a lot of time decorating their houses for the season.

In America, Britain, and Australia Santa Clause flies around the world on his sleigh towed by 12 reindeer (see above picture) on Christmas. He brings presents to all the boys and girls who have been good that year.

In Slovakia baby Jesus brings the gifts through the window. When he leaves, he rings a bell to let the family know their presents have arrived.

In Greece families put out a bowl of water and basil to protect against bad spirits called Killantzaroi. Greeks actually exchange gifts on January 1st.

In Russia people celebrate Christmas on January 7th because of a difference between the Julian and Gregorian calendars.  Even though Christmas was banned under Communist rule, the holiday has made a strong come back since the Iron Curtain came down.

Next week we’ll look at New Year’s and the tradition of New Year’s resolutions.

What did you learn from this post? What did you find interesting about this post?  Are there similar holidays or traditions in Turkey?

The Oxford House Cafe

Image
The Oxford House College Cafe is the only cafe in Turkey where only English is spoken.  It is open to anyone and everyone.

The cafe is located on the 8th floor of our İstiklal Branch.  It has an amazing view from the balcony.

It’s a great place to go if you want to grab a bite to eat, chat with friends, or to sit and study.

There are two computers available for students to use and there is even an English language library where you can check out books.

It’s open from 10am to 10pm daily.

Our Difference

Image

Oxford House College is not like many of the other schools found in Turkey.  We strive very hard to provide the best English language instruction that we can.

10 Reasons We’re Different:

1. Our classes focus on learning to communicate in English.  Many courses follow a grammar based approach or provide instruction in Turkish.  This is not an effective way of teaching how to communicate.  We’ll teach you some grammar, but we’ll teach you so much more than that.  We’ll show you how and when to use it and give you plenty of opportunities to practice the language in the class.

2. Our classes are small and personal.  Unlike other schools that require 15 students to open a class, we will open a class with 3 or 4.  Our class sizes never go over 13 students.  This allows the teacher to focus more on individual student needs.

3. We have ongoing enrollment.  This means that you can enter a class any time.  You don’t have to wait months for a new class to open.

4. You progress according to your level and ability.  One of the biggest determining factors in how fast a student progresses in English is their own dedication and commitment to learning the language.  If you study and practice a lot, you will improve very quickly.  We respect that and if we feel a student is ready to move up a level after a month, they can.  In the same way, some students need more practice or are just too busy to study a lot.  So, if you need more time, you can stay in the class for as long as you need.  It’s all about you and your needs.

5. Teachers are provided with regular training, development, and observation.  Unlike many other schools, we believe that learning is a life-long process.  Our students are always improving and so are our teachers.  We want to make sure our teachers are given the most up-to-date information and the tools and skills required to adapt to today’s fast paced world.

6. We integrate technology into the classrooms.  We have a computer lab set up for all our students to use and our teachers to use as well.  This technology is incorporated into the classroom whenever appropriate.  Over 70% of the Internet is in English.  Most international teleconferences are done in English.  Students have smartphones and use social media like Facebook and Twitter.  English is becoming a necessity for anyone who wants to work, live, or travel with people from other countries.  Our classes will prepare you for this new, globalized reality.

7. We care about education.  A lot of schools are only concerned about profit.  While, of course, we are a business, we are more concerned with providing quality English language instruction.  That’s why we have small classes, spend money and resources training our teachers, and pay to have the latest technology available to our students.

8. We offer a free demo to anyone who wants one.  We would never expect a student to take a course they haven’t seen for themselves.  We’re good and we’ll show you that, for free!  You should have the opportunity to make the most informed decision possible.  Unlike other schools who expect you to register without actually knowing what the classes are like, we’ll prove it to you by letting you see for yourself.

9. Students are placement tested before taking the course by one of our teachers.  This ensures that there will not be mixed levels in the classes like at other schools. Everyone in the class will be at roughly the same level.

10. Our lessons are creative and engaging.  You will be involved in your own learning.  Unlike some schools that just go through a boring book with the teacher standing at the front of the class, we provide lessons that grab your attention and keep you interested.  This, in turn, will help  you learn English faster.

We guarantee that if you come to our school you won’t be disappointed and you will learn to communicate in English.  We’ll be waiting :)
